Shayla Hrchic, 2016-2017 Student Body President, gives her speech at the Mr. OHS assembly.

During the spring sports and Mr. OHS pep assembly on April 29, two candidates, Shayla Hrncic and Allison Carter, gave their nominee speeches in hopes of becoming the next student body president.

On Thursday the results were announced: Hrncic will be the the next student body president with Carter as student body vice president for the 2016-2017 school year.

“At the end of the day we are both excited that we got the position and will be working together,” Hrncic said.

Carter also shared her thoughts.

“Throughout high school I always wanted to have a leadership position and I think seeing my older brother be in one my freshman year really inspired me,” Carter said.

As for class execs, Sohrab Azad and Aaron Mohabat tied for president of the senior class, so they will be sharing the title. Sydney Stern will be president and Louis Luong, Katelyn Henry, and Taylor Zapf will be vice president for the upcoming junior class. The sophomore class will have Maxine Taylor as president and Sam Gandhi for vice president.

“I’m just excited about getting to know everyone and getting really involved in the community. Also increasing student involvement within the community,” Hrncic said.

Hrncic and Carter have many plans to introduce next year in order to make STUCO a more innovative club. A possible event would be a walk-run to raise money and awareness for various types of cancer. Each half mile a participant would collect a bead with a color that corresponds to a certain type of cancer. Cancer survivors could be brought in to speak about their battle.

Also plans for a second Special Olympics during the spring and a casual winter dance are in the works. Hrncic and Carter plan to meet up during the summer to compile their ideas for next school year.
