With dreams of becoming a high school band director, Landon Cernich (10) has recently received news that will allow him to take the next step toward his goal — the opportunity to play with the the St. Louis All-Suburban Band.
This is a band that high school students in the St. Louis area are given the opportunity to try out for. Unlike the usual high school bands, this band only gives one performance each year after a handful of rehearsals.
Cernich hasn’t been alone during this journey, though. He appreciates the other members of the band, as well as his director for their support and motivation.
“…My friends just taught me…” Cernich said. “They just helped me to be better.”
After receiving news of his accomplishment, Cernich started to think of exactly how this could help him reach his long-term goals.
“I can get leadership experience…”Cernich said, “and also scholarships, too.”
Starting to learn to read sheet music at 7 years old, Cernich believes that his prior experience continues to help him today. Though he started with piano lessons, Cernich quickly looked toward baritone once he started middle school. He believes that taking piano lessons has helped with reading different kinds of notes quickly and multitasking.
“It’s really easy to read notes… I can read treble clef and bass clef because of it [piano lessons],” Cernich said.
Knowing that All-Suburban will help him to improve not only his music skills but his professional and leadership skills, Cernich is ready to work hard during the season and make the best of this opportunity.
“It’s gonna be a great season,” Cernich said. “I can’t wait to get started.”
