From Feb. 6 to March 13, Prime Video dropped season three episodes of
Based on the comics of the same name, season three finds Mark/Invincible (Steven Yuen) separating himself from the Global Defense Agency (GDA), training his half-brother Oliver, starting a new relationship with Eve and taking on various threats.
What makes this season different from the other seasons is how the characters drive the season forward. In “A Deal with the Devil,” we learn Cecil’s (Walton Goggins) backstory, which is juxtaposed with Mark and other characters leaving the GDA due to Cecil’s shady tactics. Cecil also delivers one of the best quotes of the season: “We can be the good guys, or we can be the guys who save the world. We can’t be both.” One of the characters that leaves is Rex Splode (Jason Mantzoukas), who had the best character development in this season. When we first meet him in season one, he is a jerk to everyone. In this season, we see that this Rex is not the same Rex we met earlier and has grown into a supportive ally and friend. Another episode where characters drive the story forward is “All I Can Say Is I’m Sorry,” where Mark fights a new villain: Powerplex (Aaron Paul), who wants revenge on Invincible for killing some of his family when Omni-Man (JK Simmons) and Invincible fought in Chicago at the end of season one. Paul delivers one of the best performances of the show, and you really feel for Powerplex. Even “This Was Supposed to Be Easy,” the weakest episode of the season, still had some great character moments, particularly between Dupli-Kate (Malese Jow) and Multi-Paul (Simu Liu).
Like previous seasons, this one still delivers brutal action. This is very prevalent in the last two episodes of the season. In “What Have I Done,” the many heroes on Earth are forced to fight several alternate reality Invincibles. This whole episode is non-stop fighting. In a montage set to “When the Party’s Over” by Billie Eilish, we see many heroes injured or dead, as well as the reaction of those around them, packing a major emotional punch. The season finale “I Thought You’d Never Shut Up” sees Mark fight Conquest (Jeffery Dean Morgan), the most powerful Viltrumite we have seen so far. In some ways, this mimics the fight between Omni-Man and Invincible, but in a good way. It’s brutal and reminds the audience that destroying the Viltrum Empire won’t be easy. This is where Cecil’s quote takes meaning: there is no good way this bloody conflict ends.
Overall, this season is the best one yet, and I cannot wait to see what future seasons have in store for fans.
