On Valentine’s Day, Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR released “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U.” A week after the most viewed Super Bowl halftime show in history, where the world watched Kendrick Lamar bully Drake, Drake dropped an RnB/hip-hop romantic album with PARTYNEXTDOOR.
When I found out that the next album coming from Drake was in collaboration with PARTYNEXTDOOR, I was slightly disappointed. I think that RnB songs with Drake and PARTY sound like they’re both asleep at the wheel. Simple beats and melodies cause me to skip the song 90 percent of the time.
The project starts out very slow and typical with “CN TOWER.” Slow and catchy rhythms make it easy to bump your head to but left me wanting more from the duo.
This theme continues until track nine “BRIAN STEEL,” and this song is my favorite from the album, a fast-paced and melodic song with only Drake. Song nine and 10 are by far the most hype off the whole project.
There was one song that stood out and not for good reasons. On “MEET YOUR PADRE,” we hear Drake attempting to speak Spanish like he had just taken one Duolingo lesson. Frankly, I’m embarrassed for Drake.
Later after that, we get “DIE TRYING” and “NOKIA,” which are really catchy and great songs. Unlike the rest of the tracks, these are in more of a pop subgenre that I think were executed really well. These songs are my second and third favorite.
The rest of the album is a snoozefest. It’s the same style of songs that Drake and PARTYNEXTDOOR do— boring and disappointing.
Overall, this is one of Drake’s middle of the road albums. Nothing stands out as revolutionary or a certified hit. It’s just the same Drake we’ve gotten for a while. So far it’s looking like “NOKIA” will be the standout hit compared to the rest of the songs. Out of five stars, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” is a two and a half stars, for the reason of the album not having that great of production and lyricism — this album sounds rushed and bland.
