Evelyn Manning (10) has a passion and love for competitive dance, a sport that requires much determination and perseverance. Manning is skilled in a variety of different types of dance, each of which she takes a lot of time and care out of her day to perfect.
“I dance for Professional Dance Center in South County. I am in six competitive dances this year: tap, jazz, ballet, hip-hop and lyrical are the types of dances I’m in,” Manning said.
Even though Manning thinks competitive dance can be draining at times, she feels the dancer must know what they are getting into so they can plan accordingly. It can be easy to get caught up in the stress of having to learn multiple dances, but according to her, what’s important is to know the limit of your own body.
“Having to learn multiple dances makes me very tired and exhausted,” Manning said.
Even though dance can sometimes be tiring, Manning always tries her best to keep going and dance to her best ability.
“My love for dance is what inspires me to keep dancing,” Manning said.
Every sport or activity comes with its own challenges and hardships, and dance is no exception.
“The worst thing about competitive dance is the amount of money my parents have to spend on it,” Manning said.
Although Manning does not see herself with a career in dance in the future, it is still a fundamental part of her life.
“My favorite part about dance is that it is very uplifting,” Manning said.
Many younger dancers are not yet competitive dancers, and they may be thinking about joining competitive dance. For these dancers, Manning offers some advice.
“I am friends with some younger dancers…” Manning said. “My advice for younger dancers would be to always believe in themselves and have fun.”
