Whelehon Wins Coach of the Year
Every November, the coaches of all the Academic Quiz Bowl teams in the area meet for a coaches convention. At this meeting, the coaches nominate and vote on which coach should win coach of the year. OHS’ coach Mrs. Christina Whelehon missed this meeting because of a marathon she participated in the day before. A few weeks later, at the team’s first event, another coach approached Whelehon and handed her a plaque. Coach Christina Whelehon had won Coach of the Year for Academic Quiz Bowl.
This was Ms. Whelehon’s first time winning the award in her six years of coaching the team. When asked how receiving the award Made her feel Whelehon answered,
“I was surprised because there were a lot of other coaches who could’ve been picked,” she also said the experience was humbling.
This year’s Quiz Bowl season has already begun and with many key players lost to graduation Whelehon sees it as a building year.
“It’s almost like we are starting from scratch,” Whelehon said.
Even with all the first time players, Whelehon knows the students are perfectly capable of winning districts like OHS has done the past four years. Congrats Coach Whelehon and good luck to Academic Quiz Bowl this season.
