In my opinion, OHS needs to have improvements done to their parking spots. For some examples, I feel like the pavement needs to be redone so there are not so many bumps and they need to fill in their potholes. They should also redo the lines and numbers for each spot. I think they should also have to have bigger parking spots for the bigger vehicle like trucks and minivans. Then on top of that, there should be more parking spots for the students who are on the waiting list .
But there are reasons why we already don’t have those improvements at the moment. We don’t have the space and land for new parking spots. Then with the number of parking spots, there is an order and a waiting list that has many people on it that are waiting to get a parking spot. The school tries to put the seniors as their main priorities, but that does mean that they need to meet certain expectations to even get a spot. The expectations they need to meet is that they have to have a GPA of a 2.5, then the right papers for the car and a valid driver’s license. Then they will put juniors on the waiting list, then sophomores, which is very rare due to the number of spots for the students. According to Mrs. Komorowski in the front office, there are only 401 parking spots available; however, between the junior and seniors class, there are more than 860 students. It is not just the limited numbers of spacing available – the school is also landlocked, according to Komorowski, which means that the district would have to buy more land around the school to create more space.
While I understand that there are issues that are out of the school’s current control with regard to the number of spaces, we could try to raise money or reallocate already available funds to fix potholes and conditions of the parking lots. They also have the prices for the parking spot very high, but they did get it to a lower price over time. I think they should take money from the parking spots and put that into remodeling our parking spots. When it comes to the waiting list, if students meet the criteria, then I think that those who have a longer commute should have a priority.
While there’s no perfect solution to our limited parking spots until the school acquires more land, we can try to improve the spots we currently have and provide those to the students who truly need them.
