Tigers claim first district title in three years
After two years of being upset in the first round of districts, the softball team lived up to the expectations this year.
The girls defeated Seckman in the district championship game last Friday (Oct. 11) 5-1, in what was a heavyweight bout between the 2nd ranked OHS and 10th ranked Seckman.
“The last two years left a bitter taste when we were upset in the first round, nut the girls came out determined this year,” said head coach Rich Sturm.
The Tigers went down early 1-0, when Allison Szydlowski hit a bomb to straight center in the first inning. After that Tigers pitcher Alex Frenz (11) shut down the Jaguars from there on out. Seckman did not threaten the rest of the game.
Offensively the Tigers were shut down until the third. OHS scored three runs in the inning to take the lead 3-1. Jordan Michalski (11) had three hits on the day, including one that drove in a run in the third.
The Tigers got two insurance runs in the 6th. Megan Allen (12) and Frenz knocked in two more runs to secure the Tigers victory.
“It was a great showing and a total team effort of all 13 girls coming out and working,” Sturm said.
The Tigers will now play Wednesday in the state sectionals, time and place TBD.
