Hockey seniors celebrate final regular season game with win
The varsity hockey team finished up their regular season with a huge win over Lafayette last Thursday night (Jan 23). Not only was it their last regular season game, it was also their senior night game, making it very special for the 13 seniors on the team.
Fittingly, the seniors scored six of the seven goals in the game. Dakota Schutz and Steve Farina each had two goals to lead the senior scorers and Ryan Lange and Zach Mitchell also scored.
“It was an unreal feeling being out on the ice,” Schutz said. “We’ve watched all the seniors before us do it, but it didn’t really sink in until the game was over that I had just played in my last regular season home game for Oakville.”
At the end of the first period, the Tigers were trailing 2-1, with the lone goal scored by Schutz. However, early in the second period, OHS tied the game 2-2 after a goal by Zach Mitchell.
The Tigers then took the lead after a beautiful display of passing from forwards Steve Farina and Charlie Freshman (11), with Farina burying the puck to make it 3-2.
Later in the second, the team really turned it up and increased their lead to four after goals were scored by Ryan Lange, Ryan Mitchell (11), and Schutz again, making it 6-2 Oakville.
The Tigers were then answered with a goal from Lafayette, and the second period ended 6-3.
Then at the end of the third period, Farina scored his second of the night, making it a 7-3 win for the Tigers.
The Tigers now look forward to the playoffs, where they are the sixth seed in the Challenge Cup. The boys first game is Thursday (Jan. 30) at 7pm. The Tigers will take on Kirkwood at Kennedy Ice Rink.
