With winter sports starting up again, the Oakville girls swim team has already competed in several meets in the past few months, and the girls are excited for the team and the rest of their season.
Part of their success as a team comes from their time involved in swimming.
“Many swimmers have had a lot of years of experience with club…” Kaylee Nguyen (12) said. “That helps a lot.”
Swimming can be a very versatile sport just like track, but the events are a bit different.
“There’s about 13 events, focusing on one stroke…” Nguyen said. “There’s this thing called a medley, where it’s basically any stroke.”
With so much going on during a meet, the team members have to prepare for each race before the meet even begins.
“…We have to set up at the very beginning our timing system so we can get all of our times from the meets,” Alexa Matoushek (11) said, “…and then we warm up and then we go through each event.”
To help the program grow, Matoushek is hoping that more people will join in the future, no matter what skill level they are at with swimming.
“Swim is for everyone…” Matoushek said. “We learn all the strokes and all the basics.”
Nguyen agreed and added that she enjoys the element of swimming where multiple skills are required throughout a race. Overall, the team members are excited to be back in the pool to see how they can take it to the top and be the absolute best.
“Our team has come a long way in the years I have been here…” Matoushek said. “People have gotten really good, and we have freshmen and sophomores come in.”
