Practice can seem like a chore, but for hockey player Carson Christopher (10), that’s all he wants to get back to after his recent injury.
Christopher sustained this injury while playing a game in strength class when a fellow student landed on him. This accident resulted in a broken fibula and ankle to Christopher’s right leg.
“I knew it was broken right when it happened and I was devastated, but right when I realized it was broken, my mind went straight to hockey,” Christopher said.
This wasn’t surprising to Christopher because he has been playing hockey since he was five and knew this could be a season-ending injury.
“I will be out for most of the regular season, so if it heals correctly, I should be ready for the playoffs,” Christopher said.
Until Christopher’s ready to get back on the ice with his team, he’ll still try to support the team by attending the games and cheering on his friends.
“I have gotten multiple text messages from the coach and my teammates, sad that I will not be on the ice with them,” Christopher said.
Despite not being able to play, Christopher will start training and building strength in his leg the second he can.
“I will not be as good as I was when I first get back on the ice, but with a lot of training, I hope to get back to where I was or better,” Christopher said.
Having played it from such a young age, hockey is Christopher’s passion and filled much of his schedule. With this injury, however, he has never been more bored.
“If I could, I would play on the pain — 100 percent,” Christopher said, “and I wouldn’t look back.”
The injury has affected most aspects of Christopher’s life, but as a golfer for OHS, he hopes it won’t still impact him in the spring.
“I don’t think the injury will affect my golf season because it is a while away and I should have long enough to practice and get back to where I want to be,” Christopher said.
Despite the setbacks it has created, Christopher believes he will learn a lot from this injury, and it might even make him better in the future.
“When my leg broke, I thought my life was over,” Christopher said, “but it has only just started.”
