With a new hit to the ground, an assistant coach comes rising from the bottom. Chemistry teacher Paige Scott has taken on the role of assistant coach for the girls wrestling team for this season.
“There was an opening for an assistant coach for the girls wrestling team, and I had been wanting to get involved in a sport,” Scott said. “This seemed like a good opportunity for me to get involved.”
Though the season is just getting started, Scott is enjoying her time in this new position.
“I have no plans to leave anytime soon,” Scott said. “So far I am loving being part of the team and coaching.”
Her duties of coaching are not only affecting her, but one of her family members as well.
“So far the hardest thing to balance coaching with my family is figuring out how to get all three kids home after school. This sometimes includes my daughter Rose coming to practices with me,” Scott said. “She enjoys watching the girls wrestle and wants to start wrestling now.”
Part of what she enjoys most about her job as coach is that she is learning alongside the athletes.
“…When I was in high school, there was not a girls wrestling program yet and very few girls did wrestle at that time. But I am enjoying learning the sport,” Scott said. “I boxed in high school and wanted to be on the wrestling team but didn’t want to wrestle boys, so I never did. I feel like wrestling is a great way to empower young women.”
In fact, empowering young women is something that Scott is hoping to do throughout this season.
“I hope I am giving the girls a positive female role model to look up to and that they keep pushing themselves to their personal bests,” Scott said. “I can’t wait to see where this season takes the team, and I am so happy to get to be a part of the OHS wrestling program.”
