Winter break was the perfect opportunity to catch up on our favorite TV shows and movies. Netflix made a wise decision of releasing the second season of a very popular show, “Squid Game,” on Dec. 26, 2024. After the very successful debut of the first season, many fans went to social media platforms, Tik Tok and Instagram, to express their passion for the series, which caused the popularity to spread even more.
The first season came out on Sept. 17, 2021 as a Nextflix original, and it became very popular in many countries. My first impression of “Squid Game” was seeing it all over Tik Tok where people would recreate scenes and analyze characters to show their love for the series. The videos were very entertaining and interesting, which made me want to watch the series myself.
We follow the story mainly from Seong Gi-hun, who participated in and won the Squid Games in season one. The story resumes three years later, and instead of being in a tough financial position, Seong Gi-hun has a mission to stop the Squid Games from continuing. To do this, he is determined to find the man who originally introduced him to the game to ask him more questions.
He works with others to track him down and eventually finds him. They sit down and talk for a little while until they start to play a game of Russian roulette. Seong Gi-hun wins this game, leaving the other man deceased. He then has a meeting with the frontman, the man who runs the Squid Game, where he is invited to play the games a second time.
This part of the show is very shocking, and even triggering for some viewers. Seong Gi-hun is challenged to play a real game of Russian roulette resulting in someone’s death. This scene is just one example of the countless intense situations the characters are put in. The suspense is built and built by the sound of the trigger while it’s missing the bullet. The characters are admitting truths and insulting each other, trying to make the other quit and appear stronger all while hearing the beautiful classical music in the background, making for a very unique scene.
This scene is just in the first episode, and it definitely serves as an introduction to the unexpected craziness that is involved in this season. This show will get your heart racing and break it at the same time due to all of the death involved.
Many fans develop favorite characters and sometimes have to see these characters die in a brutal way. It’s very sad to see your favorite character die, especially because these characters die so unexpectedly and because they were either tricked or failed to make a simple mistake. Even more heartbreaking is when there is usually no compassion or respect granted to these victims, as it’s just part of the games which makes it part of the show.
Throughout the season, the characters make so many spontaneous decisions that it starts to cause insane plot twists. Compared to the first season, I was left shocked while watching, and I know I wasn’t the only one. Countless fans showed their love for this season all over again on social media platforms, making it gain even more popularity than its first release.
In my opinion, this show is one of the best psychological, thrilling and shocking TV series. I’d heavily recommend this show to anyone, but it’s definitely not for everyone. It can be very gory, showing a lot of blood and intense violence and wounds that many viewers are sensitive to. Some people don’t like that it’s in a language they can’t understand and find difficulty watching it for that reason, though you can watch it with subtitles or dubbed.
Either way, it’s a very unique and creative series that was really fun to watch and follow with little to no spoilers received prior. If you start watching, you might find trouble being able to stop. I know I definitely did, and now am anticipating the third season coming out in late June. This is said to be the season finale, so fans are very excited to see “Squid Game” completed.
