“Plankton: The Movie,” a recent addition to Netflix, offers a fresh perspective on the nostalgic show “SpongeBob SquarePants” by shining the light on the diminutive antagonist, well-known Plankton. The movie highlights his relationship with his computer wife, Karen, while also blending humor and a little bit of music.
Of course throughout SpongeBob (the show), Plankton’s objective is to steal the secret formula for Krabby Patties. Throughout the movie, it’s the same concept, but there is a twist with it focusing more on the dynamics of Plankton and Karen’s marriage. Toward the middle of the movie, Karen begins to grow tired of Plankton’s constant failures, so she embarks on her own quest for world domination, leading to a series of comedic misadventures. The depth of their relationship throughout the movie offers viewers a fresh storyline that still resonates with the original series. The movie also gave me a lot of giggles with the fun storyline.
The musical interludes also punctuate the storyline with characters breaking into songs — this was my least favorite part of the movie because I’m not that into musicals. Although, I think that younger viewers might enjoy the music and singing a bit more than the older audience.
I will say during the movie it reminds me of the old SpongeBob episodes and gave me a good feeling of nostalgia. Visually, it is different from the original 2D animation and looks more like an updated modern computer-generated film. I also think that the lack of the group dynamic with characters like Squidward, Patrick and Mr.Krab was a bit disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the movie as a whole.
I’m hoping that maybe the producers next step is to do a movie involving the dynamic groups who weren’t included in this film. I think it would be a fun way to continue their series. Overall, however, “Plankton: The Movie” offers a unique and humorous adventure of one of the most notorious Bikini Bottom characters, Plankton.
