Speech and Debate honored by state representative
Missouri state representative Marsha Haefner presented the OHS Speech and Debate team with a state proclamation on Friday, Feb. 28. The Speech and Debate team placed first in the Greater St. Louis Speech and Debate Tournament. It was the first time OHS has placed first in a long time, they beat 13 year champions, Ladue Horton-Hawkins High School.
The OHS Speech and Debate team received the most points out of any other school in the tournament. However, Katie Kohler was one member of the team who received the most points individually.
“I was thrilled to receive most points out of all the students and for Oakville to receive the most points out of any other school, was icing on the cake, it’s a great way to end senior year” said Kohler.
Speech and Debate member Sydney Montague was thrilled to receive the award, “I’m honored to be able to have Rep. Haefner recognize the team and all of our hard work is paying off” said Montague.
The Missouri House of Representatives selected Rep. Haefner to present the proclamation because Oakville is in her district.
“This represents the quality education students in the Mehlville School District receive” said Haefner, “Students can get a quality education and compete in the real world for high quality jobs and spots in universities.”
