Lunches were rowdy on March 1. as students gathered in the commons to see Spanish teachers Meghan King and Melissa Bradford get pied in the face to raise money for Spanish Club.
“We were raising money so that we (Spanish Club) could buy materials for a service project. We are going to make tie blankets for a children’s hospital,” said Bradford.
The event was organized by Spanish Club executive member, Ava Chancellor (12). This was the first time Spanish Club hosted an event like this, so it was important people knew about it.
“Spanish Club members made beautiful posters to put around the school, we had an announcement on the intercom and the commons TVs, and club members collected money at lunches,” Bradford said.
The promotional efforts of Spanish Club paid off, and Bradford found herself sitting in the commons wearing a trash bag awaiting to be pied not once, but twice.
“Even though I knew it was coming, it was still a surprise when everything went dark,” Bradford said. “But the shaving cream in the pie tins was really soft and smelled nice.”
Despite the messy scenario, it was worth it for Bradford as she got to make students laugh which is a personal highlight of being a teacher to her.
“I love it. The best part about being a high school teacher is getting to be involved in the fun things beyond the classroom,” said Bradford.
Members of the club shared the same sentiment.
“While I unfortunately did not get to pie any teachers in the face, it was very amusing to watch others do so. Specifically, the pieing of Mrs. Bradford at third lunch shocked me because of how much force the student put behind their throw,” said Spanish Club member Brendan Horn (12). “In the end, I thought the event was very successful, and I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the organizational process and watching the event take place.”
But the event was for more than just laughs, and the Spanish club was able to meet their financial goal allowing them to get all the materials needed to make the blankets.
“My favorite part of fundraisers like this is being able to support an incredible cause while creating a fun event for all students in our school to enjoy,” said Horn. “I feel that doing fundraisers like this is a wonderful way to give back to the community, support others, and create a lively environment in our school.”
