OHS softball players rank among area leaders

Without a doubt, the varsity softball team is one of the best OHS has ever seen. For the past few years, the team has maintained a nearly undefeated record and made several State Tournament appearances. On top of these hefty accomplishments, this year’s team has multiple players ranked among the areas leaders. (All stats as of Sept. 27).

Shortstop Julie Kernen (12) is tied for fourth in home runs and tied for tenth in slugging percentage leaders. Chloe Wolf (12) is ranked second in home runs and is also tied for tenth in the slugging percentage leaders.

“I’m pretty shocked I’m doing so well,” Wolf said. “My mindset is focused on doing better and hitting the ball where I want it to go and not swinging at pitches I don’t like.”

And it is no secret that pitcher Remy Edwards (12) is the best at what she does. As of Sept. 30, Edwards pitched 167 strikeouts and had a .31 ERA. In 91 innings pitched, Edwards had only given up four runs. With a 14-0 record, she had the best winning percentage of anyone in the area, according to head coach Rich Sturm.

“I try not to think about [stats] when I play games,” Edwards said. “Each team poses a threat to break our undefeated record.”

Although the team faced a devastating loss to Parkway South on Sept. 19, the team is still optimistic and has high hopes for their post season play.

“We’ve been working really hard and won’t settle for anything less than state,” Edwards said.

District play for the team will begin this week.
