Tigers warm up for season at jamboree

Andy Oliver (12) drops back to pass in the Jamboree Friday night. He connected on the play with Cartier Robinson for the Tigers second touchdown of the session.

Friday night (Aug. 23) the OHS football team had its final preseason tune up. The Tigers participated in a jamboree at OHS and faced three other area teams that gave the

Tigers a different skill set in each session.

OHS started out slow in the first session against Vianney. The Tigers offensive line struggled to protect senior quarterback Andy Oliver and the offense was stagnant only gaining a handful of yards in 12 plays. The defense made up for the offensive struggles by not allowing Vianney to score in their 12 plays, causing two turnovers (a fumble recovery by Matt Havelka (12) and an interception by Cartier Robinson (12).

“We came out a little slow on offense and had a couple of younger guys in their to start with, but on defense we came out ready to go and shut down their highly touted running back,” said offensive and defensive line starter Hayden Trout (12).

The Tigers offense came alive in the second session against Rockwood Summit. Led by Oliver and senior receivers Cartier Robinson and Kirby Phillips the Tigers marched up and down the field passing all over the Summit secondary. As well Kyle Hearn (12) broke through with a few lengthy runs of his own. The defense continued their strong showing by only allowing Summit to score once.

In the third and final session the Tigers played the quick and athletic Hazelwood East team. The offense continued to pick up momentum and drove the field. The defense held their own against the speedy zone read attack from East, only giving up two long runs.

“Overall we did pretty well, but we definitely have a lot of room to improve,” Oliver said.

The Tigers open up the regular season next week (Aug. 30) on the road at Marquette, where their season ended last year in a disappointing playoff loss. The Tigers look forward to getting their chance at revenge after losing twice to Marquette by a total of three points last season. The game kicks off at 7pm.
