Tigers claim third straight Winter Classic victory

This year marks the third consecutive year that the OHS ice hockey team has been invited to play in the Mid States Winter Classic. This is also the third consecutive year that the Tigers have won their Winter Classic game.

The Tigers defeated the Lutheran South Lancers 10-3 at Clayton’s Shaw Park last Saturday (Jan. 25). The game started slow, but the Tigers were able to push the pace in the third period.

“It was a fun experience, but we were out there to play physical and get the win,” senior forward Ryan Lange said.

The Tigers had an onslaught of scoring in the third with goals coming left and right, with an interesting goal coming from senior defenseman Kirby Phillips.

“I was at a far distance from the goal and from who I was trying to pass to, so I had to put a little bit of mustard on the pass. The wind took the puck and it started to bounce towards the goal.” Phillips said. “With the sun in his eyes, the goalie tried to play the puck out, but he missed it and the puck rolled in.”

With this win the Tigers will look to come into the playoffs hot. OHS will play Kirkwood in the opening round of the round robin this Thursday (Jan. 30) at Kennedy ice rink.
