Varsity softball gets off to blistering start

The OHS Tigers varsity softball team wasted no time getting the season started, winning the Rockwood Summit Tournament for the second year in a row.

The three-game tournament was capped off with the championship game on Friday, Aug. 29 when the Tigers beat No. 8 ranked Fort Zumwalt North 1-0. Katie Schmitt (12) knocked in the only run of the game, and Alex Frenz (12) pitched her second complete game shutout of the tournament.

Frenz pitched the entire tournament, allowing a total of nine hits over three games.

“I have a good defense that backs me up,” Frenz said. “It’s my senior year; I want to make it great and get to the Final Four.”

In their first game of the tournament on Monday, Aug. 25, OHS defeated Ursuline 11-1. Jordan Michalski (12) hit a three-run home run, and shortstop Katie Reed (12) had three hits. The game had to be delayed until 6pm because of excessive heat indexes, but head coach Rich Sturm did not make any excuses.

“The heat was no factor,” he said. “The girls play in this weather all summer long.”

Frenz pitched a complete game shutout the next day against Kirkwood in their second game, winning 6-0. Michalski led the offense again with her second home run and four runs batted in.

After winning the tournament, OHS kept their momentum going with a 15-0 win over Ladue on Sept. 2 and a 15-1 win over St. Joseph on Sept. 3. The Tigers are now 5-0 and will play again Sept. 4 at Fort Zumwalt South at 4:15.
