OHS varsity hockey optimistic heading into playoffs
After ending their regular season on a high note, the OHS varsity hockey team is looking forward to the upcoming playoffs.
The tigers beat Parkway West 6-3 in the high school Winter Classic, at Clayton Shaw Park, Jan. 26. OHS came out strong and dominated Parkway West the entire game. OHS saw goals from Scott Douglas (12), Carter Bradley (9), James Campbell (12), Kevin Healy (9), and two from Joe Pybas (11). It was a good way to start fresh before playoffs arrive.
“They played well and had a lot of fun doing so,”said head coach Tyler Sollberger. “It was a nice change to have a relaxed environment versus what we face every night in our division.”
The team’s current record is 6-13-2, but it looks to turn things around this weekend. The first round of playoffs will be against Kirkwood, at Queeny Park, starting at 8:15 p.m, on Friday Feb. 1. The second game, the Tigers will face Vianney at Affton on Saturday. Feb. 1, starting at 10:15 p.m. The third game OHS will compete against Mary Institute-Country Day School at South County Rink, Monday, Feb. 4, starting at 8:45 p.m.
OHS needs to place first or second in the round robin series in order to advance to the next round of playoffs. To guarantee a spot, the Tigers will likely need to win two of the three upcoming games.
Coach Sollberger says he has never had a season with this many injuries, but he remains optimistic about playoffs. “We are still getting healthy,” he said, “but if we have everyone available to us, we can compete with any team in the league.”
