Varsity softball takes home a district championship for the second year in a row
After an exciting 13-8 postseason win over Rockwood Summit last Friday (Oct. 18), varsity softball brought home a district championship for the second year in a row.
For seniors Amanda FitzWilliam and Calynn Gicante, this was their one last chance to secure a district title before graduation, and that’s exactly what they did.
Gicante the starting pitcher had a great game with three strikeouts and one runs batted in.
“I was beyond excited when we won,” said Gicante. “I know it’s my last year, and we have such a great bond, it felt great to win with them.”
FitzWilliam, the starting third baseman, also had a phenomenal game, recording two home runs and three RBI’s. She also hit the walkoff homerun in the 8-7 semifinal win over Cor Jesu. Despite her amazing performance, many thought she would not be able to play. A few days before the semifinal game FitzWilliam was in a car accident and did not think she would be in condition to play.
“It (the win) was incredible. After the adversity we faced at the beginning of the week, we really all came together and played our best softball.” said FitzWilliam.
“We’re taking it one game at a time,” said head coach Rich Sturm before the sectional game Wednesday (Oct. 23). “We had a couple days to celebrate the district championship, but now we have to refocus.”
Unfortunately for the Tigers they came up short, losing 10-3 against Northwest. They ended their season with a final record of 19-5.
