OHS will host its annual Battle of the Bands competition, on Feb. 9. Musical groups that have at least one student attending OHS may compete and all genres are welcome.
Admission prices are not set yet, but they will involve a small fee in advance and another at the door. Proceeds benefit STUCO’s leadership camp in the summer as well as projects around school and appreciation lunches.
Each year, several bands enter the competition. Ms. Laura Zwilling, a STUCO sponsor, said the competing bands are mostly centered around rock, although there are typically one or two rap/hip hop based groups. Zwilling estimated that about five bands have entered so far, and that the competition would hopefully grow this year.
A lot of work goes into a band in order to prepare for a show. Adem Sibic (12), drummer for Home and Away, one of the competing bands, explained the work his band is doing leading up to the show. “We’re practicing and getting our set list down,” Sibic said. “We also just finished our first full length record.”
After the show, the audience is given the opportunity to vote on their favorite band. The winner is announced that night and is given the honor of being OHS’s favorite band as well as receiving a small prize from STUCO. Chaseblue took the title last year and the anticipation is building on who will win this year.
