OHS kicked off spirit week with a pep rally in Gym A on Feb. 6. Although there will be no winter dance this year, school spirit was still high at this rally highlighting the winter sports teams.
Emily Maag (12) and Kelsey Boyle (12) hosted the assembly in Gym A and they invited team captains to update the school about girls and boys basketball, wrestling, and girls swim. The soccer team spoke about their season and second place win, and quiz bowl, history bowl, and speech and debate were congratulated for recent wins. The winter sports teams had the chance to broadcast their season, and encourage fans to come and give support.
“It gives people a chance to get in-the-know about winter sports, even if they haven’t been to any of our games,” varsity girls basketball player Alex Perry (11) said.
Performances from the Golden Girls and all levels of cheerleading followed a guest speaker about the Polar Plunge. Becca Thicknell, spoke to the school about how Special Olympics benefited her and changed her life, and therefore encouraged everyone to plunge or donate. The plunge mascot Shiver and Toby the Tiger then had a dance-off, with Shiver taking the win.
The assembly concluded with a classic student vs. teacher game. Mr. Jeff Kuchno and Ms. Lynn Scmalz went up against team captains in a balloon-pop game, with Lauren Fussell coming out as the winner.
The Monday assembly, moved to reserve Friday for open ANP and to promote Coach’s vs. Cancer on Tuesday, will be followed by Pink Day, Hat Day, Favorite Band Day, and Black and Gold Day.
