As the school year goes on, it’s no secret that students get tired and weary. Things like senioritis and laziness start to factor in and can lead to students having a lack of motivation and focus. This can eventually lead to problems like bad grades and bad behavior throughout the year. So what better way to combat this than to provide more off days throughout the school year?
These off days can help operate as mental health days for students and help give them a break. More off days being built into the school schedule can provide for many great benefits.
These days can help be beneficial to students who are feeling overwhelmed and stressed with things like schoolwork, tests and projects. These days off can help improve students’ overall mental health by giving them the day to relax and focus on themselves. It can also help prevent students from burning out and starting to get lazy during the last few months of the school year. It can also provide students the time needed to potentially catch up on any missing assignments or studying that they need to do.
This extra time off can also prove to be beneficial for a student’s academic performance. By giving students more days off throughout the year to rest, it can help lead to better focus, engagement and productivity within the classroom. This added rest can help students come back to school feeling replenished and ready to learn and engage in class and school activities.
Having more days off can also play a role in helping eliminate disruptive behavior in the classroom. By having these days off to rest it can help students get out and express all their energy which can help them become less likely to use their energy to goof around and be distracted in class.
Having these off days could additionally help encourage students to do their best leading up to the day off. With these off days, students may focus and lock-in more with their school work due to the fact that they have an extra day off to look forward to. This can help boost morale around the school and have students doing better in classes so that they don’t have to stress on catching up on their work and missing assignments.
Some schools around the country have adapted to a four-day week to help accommodate and give students a mental health day. I think this a great idea for the school district to implement. However, I do believe rather than doing a four-day week every week, it’s better to space it out and have an extra off day every two weeks. This can help balance out the amount of off days we have and can help provide a reasonable amount of breaks throughout the school year and make sure students are less likely to slack off by having a break every week.
