Despite terrible conditions, with the rain coming in sideways at points, the OHS varsity soccer team did not let anything stop them and pulled through for a 3-1 win against Rockwood Summit on Tuesday in the Class 3 Sectional match at OHS.
The action started early, with Jared Swierk (12) scoring the first goal assisted by Mike Munsell (11) only 10 minutes into the first half. Swierk came through for OHS again 21 minutes into play making the score 2-0.
Summit, finishing the season at 22-6, finally broke through the OHS defense with a goal by midfielder Justin Thomas.
Swierk hit the mark once again for OHS, scoring the game clinching goal with 13 minutes left in the game. He redirected a pass from Luke Miller (12) to seal the win.
“It was a total team effort,” Swierk said. “That’s how we win all our games, there’s no individual wins.”
Playing in a Class 3 sectional last night, it’s the first time that OHS had advanced to the quarterfinals since 2001. With a record of 19-7-1, OHS is confident they will proceed even further.
Francis Howell Central and Hazelwood West will play today and OHS will play the winner on Saturday at the winning team’s field.
