OHS hockey has taken advantage of many of their opportunities this season including playing outdoors in the annual Winter Classic.
The Tigers took on Marquette at Clayton Shaw Park Ice Rink on Jan. 21. After a scoreless battle,Brendan Nichting (11) was able to make a great pass to Brendan Coon (10), allowing him to find the back of the net, securing a 1-0 win for OHS. The win improved the Tigers record to 13-3.
“Playing the game outside was very cold, but it was a great team bonding experience and I had a lot of fun,” Coon said.
This outdoor game known as the Winter Classic gives hockey players the opportunity to get a different perspective of the game. Starting in January of 2009, the Winter Classic was extremely successful. In 2010 and 2011, the game was canceled due to warm weather. This year was the second Winter Classic and it turned out to be just as successful as the first one.
“There are few opportunities for St. Louis to play the game of hockey outdoors,” JV Developmental hockey coach Mick O’Halloran said. “So I think this is a great opportunity for our athletes.”
