Athlete of the week: Kyle Wedbush

Kyle Wedbush (12)

OHS varsity hockey goalie Kyle Wedbush (12) has played a large role in the team’s success.

Wedbush was able to help his team move forward into the semifinal round of the Challenge Cup Tournament. Wedbush has managed to save 88 percent of the shots fired this season, making him one of the team’s top players.

Wedbush has shutouts this season against Marquette, Vianney and Seckman. Against Vianney on Jan.16, Wedbush stopped all 24 shots, and on Nov.19 against Seckman Wedbush stopped all 19 shots. More recently on Feb.6, Wedbush stopped all 20 shots against Marquette. This allowed the team to advance into the quarterfinals of the Challenge Cup.

“We were able to get to this point because our team has really come together and we were there for each other if something did not go right. Also because of the fans, they give us support,” Wedbush said.

Since Wedbush and the team were able to win against Marquette, they played in the quarterfinal series against Kirkwood. The team won on Friday (Feb. 10), then lost Monday (Feb. 13) before winning the mini game to determine the winner of the series.

By beating Kirkwood, Wedbush and his team now move onto the semifinals, something they have not been able to achieve in four years. They lost to eventual champion CBC in 2013.

Wedbush and the team’s current record is 13-11-2. They are scheduled to play against St. Louis University High at the Hardee’s Ice Rink on Feb. 23 and 25.
