Athlete of the week: Will Lorenz (11)

Boys golf has had a decent season, including one of their players qualifying for state.

William Lorenz (11) played his first year of high school golf this year and ended doing better than he expected.

“I was pretty excited considering this is my first year playing high school golf; it was exciting to make it,” Lorenz said.

Lorenz worked hard to get this accomplishment.

“I believe Will has improved tremendously this season because of his work ethic,” varsity coach and guidance counselor Mr. Steve King said.

His hard work includes even after participating in the state competition; Lorenz and a few of his teammates went to the driving range to continue to get better.

“He puts in extra time at the range and works on all aspects of his game,” King said.

Lorenz is looked at as a solid player. Coach King says that his golf swing was good and he was able to modify his performance due to the adversities that spring brought.

State Competition was help in Joplin on May 15-16.

“I was very excited to compete at the highest level for high school,” Lorenz said. “I hoped to just play at my best ability.”

Lorenz did not do as well as he hoped, but he still is going to do the best he can for next year.

“I did not do that well. I plan on trying to get better and better to prepare myself for the tournament and all types of conditions,” Lorenz said.
