OHS is preparing for the start of fall sports a bit differently this year .

Softball, football, and girls volleyball all begin the weekend of Aug. 30-31. However, this season is the first time tryouts started the same week as school, giving teams less time to practice together.

Varsity softball kicks off their season with their annual Rockwood Summit Tournament in Chesterfield, with their first game to be played Friday, Aug 30. The OHS softball team won districts last year with a record of 19-9 and hopes to have as good of a season as last.

“The weather has compounded the issue of having one field for two teams,” said head coach Rich Sturm. “But I am excited for this season. We have a good mix of new kids. We have really good depth.”

Football’s season begins on Aug. 30 at Hazelwood West, starting at 3:45. Last year’s team had a record of 1-9 and looks to rebound this year.

“I feel very good about the season starting tonight,” said head coach Arlee Conners. “I feel like we are a team and not a bunch of individuals. The offseason was really good for us. With school starting the day after the first practice, I felt like guys were able to get into the routine of balancing school and football sooner.”

Volleyball’s first game is also Aug. 30 at Lafayette, starting at 5:30. Volleyball ended its season last year with a record of 22-7-3.

“I don’t think (tryouts) starting late is going to affect anything. Summer ended and we are in the groove of things,” said varsity player Emily Schellhase (12). “I think we have a super strong team. I’m playing with my best friends. I’m really excited.”
