At the end of February, the varsity girls basketball team ended their season with a record of 14-12. Our girls overcame many challenges this season, had new players come up from JV and made many memories as a team.
“This season, our team overall had a pretty good year. We started off strong with many hard wins over good teams. As we got later in the season, our record got a little rough due to injuries and sickness, but we continued to try our best and stay positive,” Alivia Schnur (11) said.
The challenges had mostly started during the second half of the season, leaving the remaining girls to try their best to keep pushing forward.
“A lot of the time in the second half of the season we were missing people, whether it’s for travel, sickness or whatever the case is. So we had people in and out, which made it hard for us to create chemistry,” Katherine Steiniger (10) said.
While there were many challenges that took place, the girls felt that they did everything they could to keep moving forward and building their team and environment.
“Our team came together and overall communicated everything,” Savannah Bentrup (10) said.
Steinger also shared that everyone who was left came to practice and worked hard to continue forward with their season. The girls also had many different forms of motivation to continue forward with their season after dealing with all of the obstacles they had to deal with.
“What kept me motivated was wanting to win,” Schnur said. “I’m very competitive and hate the way I feel when losing, so I motivate myself by remembering how it feels to win.”
The team bond grew stronger as the end of the season slowly got closer, causing many of the girls to become very close.
“Our team bond was strong. For the most part, we all got along very well,” Schnur said. “If there was conflict, there were apologies and jokes made and all would be back to normal. I would consider some of them my best friends.”
These bonds helped the team celebrate memorable moments, as many girls had their own achievements.
“My most memorable moment on the court would be winning a moneyball for my first time this season in practice …” Bentrup said.
Memorable moments created off the court brought the team even closer together and helped create a season that the varsity girls would remember.
“One of the most memorable moments off the court was when we all went bowling. We had a lot of fun and were excited to do something else together other than basketball,” Schnur said.
With the season coming to an end, the girls dealt with many different things, from lack of players to winning games, and were proud of what they accomplished.
“We were all very friendly with each other. We worked well together …” Steinger said. “We all continued to show up every day, and we also continued with those connections, which really played a part in how our season went.”
