There are many different ways to spread holiday cheer, especially by giving back to those around you. An OHS chemistry teacher gives back to his community in a special way.
“This will be my fourth year [dressing as Santa for Pet Supplies plus]. I did so because [OHS family and cosumer sciences teacher] Jamie Daughaday asked me if I would be willing to help out knowing that I love animals and I am old and white-bearded,” Nicholas Traxler said.
Besides having a white beard, Traxler has some other methods that help him get into character.
“I get into character by watching Tim Allen in ‘The Santa Clause’ movies and getting my suit on, laughing at how silly I look,” Traxler said.
Putting on his Santa suit is only the start of the laughter this experience brings Traxler.
“I had two Pekinese [dogs] that got in a fight while I held them at arms length from one another. [A] snake would not sit still, it just kept slithering all over my arm and a ferret went up my sleeve,” Traxler said. “Its always an adventure.”
With being a teacher, Traxler has seen some students that come in with their pets.
“I have had multiple students come in with their pets,” Traxler said. “The best is when they don’t recognize me and I call them by their names. That freaks them out.”
The holiday season can be incredibly busy for many people; however, Traxler finds importance in giving up your time for others.
“I think it is always important to volunteer time anytime if you are able,” Traxler said. “Give back however you can.”
