For those of you who aren’t taken, Valentine’s Day may feel lonely, but not for those who celebrate Galentine’s instead. Galentine’s Day is a replacement for the girls who don’t have that special someone but still have love to give.
“Galentine’s Day is a day where you have your gals over, like all your girlfriends instead of a valentine,” Chloe Ruth (11) said, “which is why it’s called Galentine’s.”
Some may say that Valentine’s Day is about more than just romantic connections.
“It’s important because it shows how much you can love and appreciate your friends even if you don’t have a partner,” Emma Hlavsa (12) said. “You can still celebrate all kinds of love.”
Valentine’s Day is usually thought of as a day to celebrate you and your significant other, but there are more than just romantic relationships that deserve a celebration.
“Because your friends are just as important as a lover,” Emma Rebholz (10) said. “It’s a great thing to do with your friends, and it’s super fun and it is a really good experience.”
Galentine’s Day was created in 2010 when a “Parks and Recreation” episode aired and started the phenomenon. Since then, Feb. 13 is now commonly known and celebrated as Galentine’s Day.
“I get to hang out with my friends. I can just decorate my house and dress up cute,” Hlavsa said. “We kind of just think it’s really fun and you can spend time with your friends and your family.”
The holiday is now celebrated with dressing up cute, activities, food and decorations.
“We ate food — cute, heart-shaped food — and then we made bracelets …” Rebholz said, “and then we just hung out and took pictures, so it was fun.”
For all you single ladies out there, consider having a Galentine’s day celebration with your friends.
“Because love is more than just romantic,” Rebholz said. “It can be with your friends, too.”
