The OHS band program has had a year of ups and downs. The year began with the struggle to place top ten in marching band contests then only a few students made the All Suburban band. Once second semester came around things started to look up with their Missouri Music Educators Association Convention and and Solo and Ensemble contest.
The band had over 40 students participate in district Solo and Ensemble contest on March 2. After district performances 23 students in 13 different groups were awarded a superior “one” rating and were able to compete at state.
State was Saturday April 27. Out of the 13 groups, there were 9 who received a superior “one” rating. For many students it was their first time performing at state.
“It was a cool experience and it made me a better player,” said Sara Ravens (9) who received a one rating on her solo this weekend.
Band director Vance Brakefield hopes to have even more success next year.
