Disney returns to the island of Motunui with “Moana 2,” a sequel that continues the adventures of our beloved princess Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho). Director Ron Clements and John Musker bring back the magic of the ocean with an engaging storyline and breathtaking animation.
In the movie, Moana has grown into a very confident leader among her people. She has to go on another journey of saving her island, but this time against the emerging new danger from the depth of the ocean. Along the way, she gets new allies and faces almost impossible challenges that will test her courage and determination, but this isn’t all that is new. The sequel goes more in-depth about Polynesian mythology by introducing new characters and creators to enrich the storyline.
One of the largest contributors to this movie would be the musical score, composed by Opetaia Foa’i, Mark Mancina and Emily Bear. Music for this movie is really both up-lifting and emotional, movingly communicating what was going on in Moana’s experience and the spirit of her culture. Songs such as “Beyond,” “Get Lost” and “Can I get a Chee Hoo?” will most certainly be instant classics like our forever known favorite “How Far I’ll Go” from the original movie.
Additionally, the animation in “Moana 2” is stunning. The bright colors and complex landscapes bring the islands to life, immersing the audience in Moana’s world. The ocean, itself a character, is given a realistic and fluid visual rendition that adds to the visual appeal of the film.
Cravalho is as riveting as ever, capturing the growth and maturity of Moana. The new characters add depth to the story, with added elements that complement Cravalho’s portrayal. The film’s themes of self-discovery, resilience and the importance of community resonate strongly, making “Moana 2” a worthy successor to the original.
Above all, “Moana 2” is an excellent sequel which expands on Moana’s story in ways that its action, emotion and richness in culture come together as part of one well-rounded film. Fans of the first film will not be disappointed, and new audiences will find much to love for this new exciting sequel.
