The Oakville varsity softball team began their season Friday night with a win in the Rockwood Summit preseason tournament. The team scored in every inning but one to defeat Rockwood Summit 8-3.

A steady offense and outstanding pitching led to three solid wins and the start of what looks to be a great year. The tournament opened with a 14-1 win against Kirkwood on Wednesday, Aug. 28. In the semifinals on Thursday, Aug. 29, Oakville beat Ursuline Academy in an 8-2 win at home.

“We stay very positive and really motivate one another,” catcher Adrianna Wegmann said. Wegmann had a strong offensive game in the semifinals against Ursuline, hitting her first homerun of the year with a two-run shot that scored pitcher Alex Frenz.

Frenz was a key player in the tournament as well, pitching two out of the three games and batting in three runs in the championship game.

“I think it’s gonna be a really fun year,” Frenz said.

The varsity team also added five new players this year. The new teammates helped make their first tournament of the year a great one.

“Our goal was to come in and win this tournament,” Madie Behnen (11) said. Behnen is one of three players who played on the JV softball team last year. “We wanted to kick off this season right, and we did.”
