Boys swimming makes splash with new practices

Ryan Brady (12) finishes a mock race at practice.

The swim team has revamped their practices. The team has always practiced at Mehlville’s pool, due to Oakville’s lack of one. However, this year their practices are now before Mehlville’s, at 2:30 instead of 4:00. The practices are not only earlier, but also shorter.

Altogether the team seems pleased with these changes. “It’s nice to get home before it’s dark. And the practices aren’t too much harder, despite the shorter length,” said Ryan Brady (12).

In addition to practices everyday after school the teams sometimes has Saturday morning workout sessions at OHS from 9:00-10:30.

The practices are aimed towards getting the team in shape, and working towards state. The team needs to drop 2 seconds on their 200 free relay (made up of Jake Landman (12), Zach Neisius (10), Nick Zeltman (12), and Brady to qualify. The team also hopes to send some individual swimmers to state.

“For sure Jake and Ryan are going to make it [to state]. Possibly Zach and Nick too,” said Vito Cammarata (10).

This year there are four returning seniors Landman, Brady, Zeltmann, and Joe Keller. They are working on getting the freshman in competition shape.

“They have potential, to say the least,” said Landman.

“They just lack a good work ethic,” added Brady.

The team hopes their hard work will pay off and they will have a successful season.
