Oakville suffers tough loss to CBC, Knocked out of CYC Tournament

Michael Ruzicka (12) goes up for a head ball against Webster Groves in a game earlier this season.

The Varsity boys soccer team needed either a win or a tie in Thursday night’s (Sept. 26) game against CBC to move into the semifinals of the CYC Tournament, yet suffered a 3-0 loss which eliminated them from advancing.

The team went into the game with high hopes after beating Webster Groves 3-0 on Monday night, and a tie to Trinity 1-1 on Wednesday

The tigers fought hard in the first half, keeping most of the play headed towards the Cadets end. The best scoring chance came at the end of the first, after a free kick from defender Justin Pike (11) was sent into the box and headed towards the net by midfielder Nick Makowski (12), but CBC’s keeper made an impressive save to keep the game knotted at 0-0 at the end of the half.

The boys continued their aggressive play into the second half, yet four minutes in, CBC was given a free kick near the top of the box at Oakville’s end. The free kick was sent in and headed off of the crossbar, but was then finished off with another header into the back of the net.

Oakville kept pressing on following the goal by CBC, with forward Kolade Osikoya(11) making a few runs down the sideline with the ball, but couldn’t get anything to spark.

CBC finished off the Tigers with yet another header for a goal off of a free throw with 16:25 left to play to make the score 2-0, and then a shot from outside the box which found its way in at 1:25.

The tigers gave it all they had in the game, but couldn’t seem to find any scoring chances and eventually ran out of gas. Their next game will be on next Tuesday, October 1st, 6pm at Northwest.
