Girls Basketball is “Best of the Rest” in MICDS tournament

After a loss in the first game of the MICDS Holiday Tournament, the OHS girls basketball team came back strong to win the consolation bracket on Friday, Jan. 3.

Alyssa Norberg was the team’s strongest player offensively, scoring 48 points overall in the tournament. In the championship game, her 27 points boosted OHS to a win.

“We pulled together when the score was close. We pulled through in tight situations,” Norberg said. “We were all joking that we were the best of the worst.”

First the Tigers faced Francis Howell, losing 69-34. With the loss, OHS was put into the consolation bracket of the tournament. Francis Howell pulled away because of turnovers; the Tigers had 23 in the game, while the Vikings had none. At the end of the first quarter, the score was 26-5, which set the tone for Francis Howell’s dominating game.

The Tigers picked themselves up against Villa Duchesne, winning 49-36. Taylor Ventimiglia (12) had 15 points. The win put them in the consolation bracket championship against Triad.

The Triad Knights were not prepared for the onslaught of offense that Oakville brought. Alyssa Norberg had 27 points. In the first quarter, Oakville jumped out to an early lead, 17-6. However, they let Triad come back; at the end of the third quarter, OHS was losing 25-24. OHS woke up in the fourth quarter, scoring 21 points and winning 45-36.

The Tigers are 3-2 now, and their next game is on Friday Jan. 10 at home against Parkway South.
