OHS Soccer Shrugs Off Sluggish Start, Beats Belleville West

OHS Varsity Soccer struggled in their opening game of group play in the CYC Bob Guelker Memorial Soccer Tournament against Belleville West but came away with a 1-0 victory.

Oakville attempted to keep possession in the first half but could not secure the ball against  Belleville West, who play in a high pressure defensive system. The Tigers goalkeeper Joe Martinelli (12) prevented every chance that came in the box. He was challenged by West’s offense from every angle but was simply unbeatable.

“The first half was shaky,” Martinelli said. “There were a lot of set pieces and throw-ins, but we improved in the second half. ”

In the second half, OHS came out with urgency and fire behind them. Passes were starting to connect; the Tigers were getting out of there own half and starting to dominate possession.

“In the second half we started playing Oakville Soccer,” head varsity coach Dave Robben said.

The strong effort in the second half was capitalized when Alex Braasch (11) sent a ball to forward Thomas Hutcheson (12), who flicked the ball over two Belleville West defenders and chipped the goalie for the game’s only goal.  Hutcheson now leads the area in game winning goals with six after last night’s heroics.

“We didn’t play our game,” Hutcheson said, “But we finished with the W and we’re off to a good start.”

The Tigers are looking forward to a challenge when they continue group play Sept. 24 at 7:45 against SLUH at Soccer Park.
