Seniors Ben Lanier and Helen Tolcou perform in last year’s show “Memories of You.”

In a year unlike any other, OHS Winter Guard has seen many changes. While their competitions are all virtual this year, they have still been busy preparing their show.

“Our theme is ‘Afloat.’ It’s basically about feeling light and happy, like how you feel with friends and family,” said Ben Lanier (12).

Such a lighthearted story is needed in a year like his one. However, there have been some challenges for the group.

“Our forms are more spread out, but we wear masks the entire time to keep it safe even if we are closer,” said Lanier. “We have a team of 10 which is smaller than usual, but our choreography is much more challenging this year and we are handling it pretty well.”

While the team is smaller than normal, the group is still working hard for their season to continue.

“Since we can’t have in person competitions, we are having virtual competitions,” said Helen Tolcou (12). “Two weeks before comp day we get ready and film a take of the show, which we submit. Then on comp day they are all played on FloMarching.”

The Winter Guard will participate in their first competition virtually on Saturday, Feb. 27. Check back here for an update.
