Jaina Mazdra (9) poses for a photo. “After the Blues won the Blue Note Cup, I really wanted to do something other than swim…and I just thought why not [play hockey],” Mazdra said. Mazdra has only been playing hockey for two years.

Jaina Mazdra (9) spends her free time playing as a goalie for not only one, but two hockey teams: Oakville and Lady Liberty.

“After the Blues won the Blue Note Cup, I really wanted to do something other than swim…and I just thought why not [play hockey],” Mazdra said.

Mazdra is the first female goalie for Oakville hockey. She has only played for two years and sometimes encounters problems on the ice.

“For me, I have anemia and asthma, so I get tired very easily,” Mazdra said.

Even when it gets hard, she never stops persevering. Mazdra even has a few ways to help her keep going.

“I just think about my team and how I can help them,” Mazdra said.

She wants to keep playing hockey for Oakville all throughout high school to get a scholarship for college.

“My friend…who plays for Oakville got a scholarship…just for being a girl, so there’s more possibilities,” Mazdra said.

Playing on an all-girl team has also helped her to keep her spirits up.

“I’m friends with all of them (her teammates). I don’t really fight with them a whole lot,” Mazdra said.

Mazdra loves hockey for the sport and thinks some people overlook it.

“Hockey seems like a sport, kind of like boxing, where you just hurt people all the time,” Mazdra said, “but it’s totally not like that. It’s more about the team and the bonding going on.”
