From walking through the cheerful, crisp, winter winds to being on your cozy couch trying to cuddle up from the cold, there is always a good Christmas classic to keep you company in the holiday season. OHS students and staff voted on their favorite Christmas movies: “A Christmas Story,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Elf,” “Home Alone,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Miracle on 34th Street,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “The Polar Express” and “The Santa Clause.” Not only did these movies appear, but a wide variety of other movies were mentioned in the “Other” category, such as: “Red One,” “Die Hard,” “The Year Without a Santa Clause,” “Krampus,” “Santa Clause is Comin’ to Town,” “Home Alone 2,” “While You Were Sleeping,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Spirited,” “‘Twas the Night,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch (2018),” “White Christmas,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Gremlins.”
In the holiday season, you may have seen most of these movies. Each one brings a different aspect of Christmas to life and builds your childhood. These are the reasons why most of these movies are so popular and the favorites of many members of OHS.
“’The Grinch’ is my favorite because I have been watching it since I was little. I also watch the movie every night when I go to bed,” Abbey Schmidt (12) said. “This movie is so great and reminds me of my childhood. I have memorized the whole movie.”
While collecting the school’s favorite Christmas movies, there was a lot said about three particular movies: “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Elf” and “Home Alone.”
“I absolutely love ‘The Grinch.’ It has been one of my favorite Christmas movies since I was a child. I also love ‘Elf’ because of the humor,” Lyla Larrigan (12) said.
“I like both ‘Elf’ and ‘Home Alone’ because of how classic they are, and also they are funny,” Hannah Essner (12) said. “I really enjoy watching them with my family. I like the movie ‘Spirited’ also because it is funny, and I love the musical aspect of it.”
As seen, the most popular movies recorded around OHS were “Home Alone” with 20.9% of votes, “Elf” with 16.7% of votes and “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” with 14.9%.
Even from outside sources, “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is a popular movie along with the book that Dr. Seuss wrote himself. The movie encompasses all the childhood memories of reading the book into the movie. “Elf,” another favored classic, has unforgettable characters, Christmas spirit and good-natured comedy. Along with “Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas ” and “Elf,” “Home Alone” was the most popular movies out of the many. Outside sources also say that “Home Alone” is beautifully written, as well as combines comedy with strong family messages. With such a young actor, the film correctly captures the childlike feel and essence it was meant to give.
Inside and outside of OHS, there are many people who love all of the classics that will remain in the books for years to come.
“I really like these films because they hold such a happy, warm, nostalgic feeling to me,” Rumeysa Ilyazovai (11) said. “It manages to bring you such a happy feeling, but also the cinematography work of it all is so pretty.”
