*SPOLILER ALERT*
“Sidelined 2: Intercepted” is a cute rom-com sequel following the love story of two college freshmen, Dallas Bryan and Drayton Lahey, as they navigate their relationships, sports and schoolwork. The movie gives insight into how hard it is to keep a relationship in college, even if you are not far away from each other and because of how many directions people are pulled.
In my opinion, the acting was better in ‘Intercepted’ than ‘The QB and Me.’ Noah Beck and Siena Agudong took a step up from the last movie. I also think the dancing was depicted much better in the second movie. However, the storyline was not as great. I feel like it was not what the fans wanted. It ended with them not being together, which is not how I thought it was going to end. Maybe this is how they will set up a third movie. However, Dallas and Drayton do depict the struggles of being in a relationship in college very well. I feel like this movie could be eye-opening for some teens knowing there is such a thing as the ‘right person, wrong time,’ as Dallas says. Even though someone cannot fit in your life now doesn’t mean they will not find their place in the future, perhaps when you are less busy and have more time to give. I think that is what we are going to see in the third installment if there is one. I think we are going to see them come back together because I do truly believe they are the right people at the wrong time.
Throughout the film, Dallas’ coworker was obviously into her, but she stayed in her lane because she was in a committed relationship. However, I was rooting for Skylar, played by Charlie Gillespie, during the movie. He was there for Dallas when Drayton was too busy with football or wallowing over his injury. He showed up to Dallas’ dance, not Drayton, and brought her flowers. I think that he would have been a good fit for her. However, I do still believe that Drayton and Dallas will end up together in the long run.
Additionally, I loved how Drayton and Dallas got their two friends together. That made my heart happy. I also loved how we see Dallas’ brother, and I was highly intrigued that we saw Drayton’s dad have a kind heart in this movie, as he did not annoy me at all this time around.
A bone I have to pick with the movie is why she is moving to New York for a movie. CalArts had been her dream for years. She worked tirelessly to get herself there in the first movie. Why is she moving across the country on a whim? I personally was not a fan of that part of the storyline. I think that was out of character and she should stay at CalArts, get an education and strengthen her dance skills.
Overall, I did enjoy this move. I think the first one was better, but they were both good. As of right now, a third movie has not been announced, but I have a gut feeling that we will be seeing a third one.
