Journalism students get recognized by the Mehlville School District Board.

The awards keep coming for six students from the journalism program at OHS.

The students were recognized at the Mehlville School District Board of Education meeting on Jan. 22 for their achievements during school and at the National Journalism Convention in November.

The six students were from all three sectors of the journalism program at OHS: newspaper, broadcast, and yearbook. The students were Hannah Hoffmeister (Honorable Mention in Sports Writing), Megan Haislar (Excellent in Graphic Design), Jacque Dreppard (Honorable Mention in Video Editing), Jacob King (Superior in Broadcast Commentary), Kassidy Mooney (Superior in Broadcast News Story), and Madie Behnen (Honorable Mention in Sports Photography).

In order for Hannah Hoffmeister (11) to qualify for her award, she had to write a sports feature article in about an hour and a half after she completed an interview.

“It was challenging so the recognition was surprising,” says Hoffmeister.

Jacob Lipina (12) also went to the Board of Education meeting to represent the broadcast program because OHS’s Channel 97 News was recognized as a Broadcast Pacemaker finalist. This is the third year in a row that the OHS has earned the finalist reward.
