The golf course has not always interested Austin Sahrhage (10), as he played soccer growing up, but things changed his freshman year.
“What got me into golf is probably my friends. I would say I started golf around two years ago and had nothing else to do and just tried out for golf,” Sahrhage said.
Sahrhage feels it can be both difficult or easy to play depending on the competition.
“I would say golf at Oakville is pretty hard. We have pretty good competition and a pretty good team … but overall it just depends on how you play,” Sahrhage said.
Sahrhage also thinks it’s very fun to play not just for his friends, but for other reasons, too.
“Playing other schools, I mean it’s fun meeting other new people, but the first time it’s a little awkward,” Sahrhage said. “But you gradually start talking to them and its more fun playing with them.¨
For Sahrhage, golf is more than just meeting new people.
“The team here at Oakville is very awesome. Mostly everyone gets along with each other,” Sahrhage said. “Most people know each other, and everyone just has fun.¨
While playing with the students here at Oakville may be fun, Sahrhage has also been impacted by the coaching.
“The coaching staff is very good here. They organize everything well, there very nice and they make us better players” Sahrhage said.
While the coaches make the team better, he says some of the team’s talent comes from natural ability.
“The kids I play golf with are pretty good. Actually some are really good or some are not the best, but all we can do is have fun,” Sahrhage said.
While Sahrhage enjoys playing golf with his friends, he has other favorite things to do.
“Leaving school early is probably my favorite thing to do, or if I’m in a tournament, no school at all. I just think it’s awesome,” Sahrhage said.
Sahrhage also has a few other favorite things to do with golf, especially the courses he plays at.
“My favorite course to play at is probably Sunset Hills because it’s just a very nice course. The greens are well done, the fairways are nice. It’s just a very beautiful course in general,” Sahrhage said.
Sahrhage has played two sports at OHS and thinks it’s amazing being a student athlete at Oakville.
“I think being a student athlete is a very cool experience,” Sahrhage said. “You go to school, then after that you play the sport you love.”
