Abigail Catanzaro (9) wanted to get involved in a new sport this year, and she found that field hockey was a perfect fit.
“[I started playing] because I wanted to get involved in sports and stuff, so I thought field hockey would be fun, because it has lots of similarities to soccer, which is my main sport,” Catanzaro said.
As a freshman, tryouts can be a challenging process, but she ended up getting through them.
“The tryouts were pretty difficult to do, but I quickly caught on,” Catanzaro said.
Since Catanzaro is a multi-sport student, balancing school work and her social life might be a tough challenge.
“It feels fine. I go to practice after school, go home, do any homework I have to do, and any other sports practices or games I have after that,” Catanzaro said.
Catenzaro’s sister had a large impact on her wanting to do field hockey as well.
“My sister Annabelle played at Nerinx, so that made me want to try out at Oakville for their field hockey team,” Catanzaro said.
Catanzaro has been really enjoying field hockey since it ended and wants to continue next year. Catanzaro has many favorite parts of field hockey and playing with her team, but one thing in particular stands out.
“One of my favorite things is probably the bus rides to away games with all my friends,” Catanzaro said.
Catanzaro says she has made many new friends when starting field hockey that she has connected with.
“I’ve definitely made new friends on the JV team while playing that are upperclassmen that are so nice and very easy to talk to,” Catanzaro said.
While she enjoys almost everything about the sport, there are aspects of it that stand out.
“I like it because it’s pretty competitive but also very fun,” Catanzaro said. “I enjoy it.”
Since the season ended, Catanzaro was very happy with the team’s many wins and her development.
“My teammates have really grown me as a person,” Catanzaro said, “and helped change my skill set in field hockey.”
