Coach Dave Robben stands with players Matt Greubel (11) and Samed Ganibegovic (10) after an OHS goal. The Tigers won 3-2 against Marquette, which gave Robben his 500th career win for boys soccer.

History was made at 7:41 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, on the OHS varsity home soccer field.

Coach Dave Robben got his 500th win in his 32nd year of coaching boys soccer in Oakville’s 3-2 win over Marquette. He is the first coach in Missouri history to reach 500 wins for both boys and girls soccer.

“It was awesome, especially with these kind of guys,” Robben said. “They are what we call old-school, throwback guys. They work hard.”

Dominic Riggio’s (10) goal in the first half gave OHS a 1-0 lead at halftime. In the beginning of the second half, Ahmed Ganibegovic (12) scored.  With a little over 22 minutes left in the second half, forward Thomas Hutcheson (12) scored on a penalty kick to give OHS a 3-0 lead. Hutcheson leads the team in goals with nine so far this season.

“It’s nice to get [it] on the first home game of the season,” Hutcheson said. “I hope we can keep the winning streak going.”

Marquette scored two goals in five minutes, making the score 3-2 with eight minutes left in the second half. The Tigers were forced to defend their lead in order to secure the win.

“We bend, but we don’t break–that’s our philosophy,” Robben said. “We had the game under control when we went up 3-0…In the end, we got a little disorganized, but we stayed up 3-2. I think it’s a credit to the guys — not only this team, but also over the years that we got the 500 ‘w’s.”Robben has 567 wins for the girls soccer team and now 500 for boys soccer.

“All of them understand what it means to be a member of Oakville soccer. WAOS — We Are Oakville Soccer — is more than just a phrase that we chant. It’s a concept and belief in the program. It reflects our love for the game.”

Varsity soccer is 6-0-1 and will play next on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Francis Howell Central.
