Ahmed Ganibegovic (12) celebrates with Thomas Hutcheson (12) after Ganibegovic scored a goal in the Tigers’ 3-2 win over Marquette on Sept. 11.

Even though the OHS varsity soccer struggled in their opening game of group play in the CYC Bob Guelker Memorial Soccer Tournament against Belleville West, they still came away with a 1-0 victory.

Oakville fought to keep possession in the first half but could not secure the ball against  Belleville West, which plays a high pressure defensive system. OHS goalkeeper Joe Martinelli (12) prevented every chance that came in the box.

“The first half was shaky,” Martinelli said. “There were a lot of set pieces and throw-ins, but we improved in the second half. ”

In the second half, OHS came out with urgency and fire behind them. Passes were starting to connect; the Tigers began to dominate possession.

“In the second half we started playing Oakville soccer,” head coach Dave Robben said.

The strong effort in the second half was capitalized when Alex Braasch (11) sent a ball to forward Thomas Hutcheson (12), who flicked the ball over two Belleville West defenders and chipped the goalie for the game’s only goal.  Hutcheson is now tied for the area lead in game winning goals with six after last night’s heroics.

“We didn’t play our game,” Hutcheson said, “But we finished with the ‘W’ and we’re off to a good start.”

The Tigers are looking forward to a challenge when they continue group play tonight at 7:45 p.m. against SLUH at Soccer Park.
