Tom Hoffmeister (9) dribbles towards the hoop in the freshman basketball team’s championship game in the Seckman Tournament on Dec. 4. The freshman team beat Hillsboro 60-39.

The OHS freshman boys basketball team was aiming for its second straight championship title in the Seckman Tournament when they fell behind 14-1 in the first quarter.

“We came out and weren’t that aggressive offensively or defensively,” head coach Josh Noblitt said.

Going into the second quarter, the boys seemed to have gained the confidence to finish the game strong. They scored 27 points in the second quarter and went into the second half with the lead.

“We picked up pressure and turned the defense into offense,” Noblitt said. “After a couple easy buckets went down, the hoop just seemed to get bigger and bigger and bigger.”

The boys won the championship 60-39 against Hillsboro.

“I thought we played really well and worked well as a team,” guard Tom Hoffmeister said.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, OHS beat Fox 34-23. They advanced to the championship game after beating Northwest 54-37 on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Hoffmeister, guard Jack Stilinovic, and point guard Dylan Portell were all important players in the tournament, contributing good ball handling.

“I was pretty excited to win, and it gave us confidence going into the regular season,” Portell said.
